Software Tools & Skills Of The Future
What would you recommend is the best modelling software for a Business Analyst in 2023?
Dear Reader,
This week I am writing about two topics:
Miro or Draw for Business Analysis Modelling?
Question Of The Week: What are the skills of the future?
I hope you enjoy it! I look forward to reading your comments below.
💻💡 In the Spotlight: Miro or Draw for Business Analysis Modelling?
During the Business Analysis Pro Career Program, I facilitate for beginner business analysts, we use both Miro and Draw for different parts of our practical work assignments.
The reason I chose both these tools for the program is because for me they are quite different although you can draw similar diagrams using both.
Miro: This is a very robust collaboration drawing tool which can also be used for creating creative models and visuals for a wide range of purposes beyond business analysis. It is a highly versatile and flexible tool with all the capability a Business Analyst needs when it comes to diagrams and even for facilitating brainstorming workshops!
Draw: This free drawing tool that you can use even without creating an account looks and feels more like the drawing software that I am used to. It looks a bit like MS Visio and MicroGrafx Flowcharter. It also contains all the technical notational elements you would expect to see for UML and BPMN v2 to name but a few.
My preference for Business Analysis diagrams?
I think it is Draw … perhaps it is my age shining through here and I am clinging to the old-style diagramming interface or perhaps it is a bit more technically correct when it comes to diagramming notations, either way, that is my favourite for this use.
I love using Miro for many other things, one being collaborating on ideas and workshops!
What about you?
🤔❓Question of the Week: What Are The Skills Of The Future
This million-dollar question should be on every knowledge worker’s mind, including Business Analysts.
If you look at this list (see image below), many of those skill areas are already performed by AI or in deep collaboration with AI.
Many argue that in time (2-5 years), the number of humans required to help perform many of those tasks will drastically diminish…. this is quite a scary thought!
I am concerned, and now is the time to reset our career focus and plans.
We cannot afford to look the other way – things are changing fast.
One of the questions I’ve been pondering:
👉 “What skills will AI not easily perform better and faster than us?”
Whilst I don’t have a clear answer to this, and anyone who says they do will (in my opinion) be lying, I think it is wise to learn as much as possible about collaborating well with AI and maximising your human ability.

🔔 Closing Thoughts
There are many incredible software tools available in the market today and that sometimes makes it hard to choose or recommend which one to start with as a Business Analyst. I enjoy using Miro and Draw for different purposes and recommend you try them out too.
The thought-provoking question this week is one to spend some time on...
Whilst we should all live in the moment; it is also important to read what this moment is telling us to focus on towards the future.
All the best,
